Artist Retreat Week

The Artist Retreat Week is a session designed for any artist at any level in any medium. It is ideal for the artist who doesn't want structured time or instruction but would benefit from having time to work , enjoy the experience, and meet other artists at Nimrod Hall.  Perfect for the very beginner who is looking for time to learn on their own or the artist in a place where they need time to work but on their own,  to the professional artist who simply needs the time to work  in an idyllic setting.   Aside from an opening reception and a closing walk-around viewing that is optional, where all of our artists are welcome, there will be no formal critiques or expectations.  Nimrod Hall has an amazing ability to bring out the artist or writer in anyone and having nothing to do but attend meals that are served to you can jump start a creative block or start a whole new life. You do not have to be a visual artist  but can be a photographer, a writer, a poet or any number of creative endeavors. A studio is important if you require quiet, so rent one if that is the case.

June 17-22, 2018 - Laura Loe

Laura Loe

Laura Loe is the Owner/Director of Nimrod Hall. She has been the Director of Nimrod Hall Artists since  1997 and purchased the property in 2013 to continue the longstanding tradition of providing such an inspirational and amazing place to create, but aside from Nimrod, she has been a professional oil painter for over 20  years.

Advanced Oil Painting

This week is for the advanced artist who is looking for guidance on their own voice. This is not a week for the beginner artist or one who expects technical help as there will not be formal critiques and formal lessons, but aimed at those who work hard, expect themselves to embrace hard work, and have an open mind to feed off the other artists in the group, while getting in much needed time to work. Laura will talk to every artist every day one-on-one yet not try to guide the artist away from his or her unique approach, but encourage that growth. Director of the artist workshops and owner of Nimrod Hall, Laura has been a professional oil painter since 1996, taught at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School for over a decade, shows in many galleries, has won many awards for oil paintings and was recently chosen as a Woman in the Arts award recipient in Richmond, VA. If you are not sure if you have the experience for this week, please email Laura at laura@nimrodhall.com

Laura's work can be found in many corporate and private collections.  Please see her work and resume at:  www.lauraloe.com

9 private studio’s are available for an extra fee of $120. They will be rented on a first come basis and will need to be rented when you register, or on arrival if available. This week studio rental usually rents quickly. If you want a stdio then please do it when you register.

Kesra Hoffman

Mixed Media

Kesra Hoffman has been coming to Nimrod to paint for many years and we are lucky to have her teaching at Nimrod for the third time, taking her from her teaching in Bethesda, MD.  Kesra is an artist who is proficient and comfortable in many mediums and creates beautiful work in every one. In most cases, she uses the media purely, not mixing them, but just focusing on whatever she gravitates toward at any given time. It is a gift to be able to toggle through many different tools and can help technically with almost anything you throw at her. She has a gift for landscape and the ability to circumvent the chaos of greens and layer her works with delicate colors to simplify but still keep the Virginia landscape solid and beautiful.  She is the teacher to choose to work with for looking at things in different ways and trying new materials but can also be just as helpful with plein air oils and traditional approaches.

July 8-13, 2018 - Purnell Pettyjohn/Diego Sanchez/Artist Retreat

Purnell Pettyjohn

Watercolor and Oil Painting

Watercolor and oil paintingsYou would be hard pressed to find someone who approaches life with as much sheer pleasure as Purnell, her laugh and personality being totally infectious and without an ounce of intimidation or pretension but a serious, dedicated artist lies behind that bubbly exterior. Her teaching style reflects her personality. Purnell is an artist who can toggle effortlessly between oil paint and watercolor and is a master of both. With her as an instructor you can choose to do both or either medium, but please note that she will not be teaching beginning skills but will be working on the ones you already know and helping you expand your own visions and voice. She will help either medium become stronger but true beginners are not a good fit for this week long class.  Purnell teaches watercolor and oil in Lynchburg, Virginia, and infuses her work with her personality- fun and whimsical! Her approach is colorful while emphasizing light and shadow to create form in an truly distinct and beautiful way.

July 15-20, 2018 - Rosalie White / Anne Walker / Artist Retreat

Rosalie Sunderland Day White

Rosalie White is as much a fixture at Nimrod Hall as the deer heads in the dining room! She has been with us, at Nimrod Hall, for many many years yet still can just find things over and over to paint in her signature, small yet terrifically impactful style. She is a plein air painter who can take to the scene with a cigar box fashioned into a paint box and come away with a masterpiece...before breakfast! Her supportive style works with any painter looking to improve their own skills whose paintings are any size as she is one who is there to help you capture what you are going for. She is someone who understands the plein air approach and can share that with you but also is a still life painter. She has been painting for many years and is great for the painter who is more advanced and needs an eye but not beginner instruction .  Rosalie comes to us as a valued instructor at the Beverly Street Studio School in Staunton, VA, and teaches in Lynchburg to a dedicated group of painters. For more about her artwork visit:  www.academycenter.org

Anne Walker

Anne Walker is teaching a week devoted to the more beginner oil painters, but this is not a strict beginner workshop. If you have never painted at all, start the Friday before in her beginner weekend and then stay through the week to get your most benefit for learning. Anne is perfect for the artists who has never taken a workshop before, but has started to paint.   Anne began her career as a student of Laura Loe many years ago and is now a professional painter of her own. She has been coming to Nimrod Hall for over 16 years and is an expert of all things Nimrod and can help the beginner painter with supplies, basic information and most of all, a sense of humor that is unrivaled. You will not find a more dedicated teacher and that goes for any level of painter, but for anyone new to art,  Anne can teach you more in one week than many months long classes.  Due to the nature of the class, this week will be more hands on and there will be more group activities offered, all of which are optional.
